About HeartCaring
HeartCaring is a program that helps hospitals improve heart health in their community while profitably integrating hospital and physician clinical and outreach initiatives. HeartCaring involves a three-prong approach to planning and implementation that includes hospitals, clinicians, and consumers in an effort to increase gender-sensitive heart disease awareness. The need for a gender-sensitive approach to cardiology is underscored by the growing body of research that reveals an under-diagnosis of heart disease in women as well as variations in clinical indicators, symptoms, and treatment regimens. HeartCaring is administered by the Spirit of Women Hospital Network with educational support from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
The goals of HeartCaring are:
-
To provide hospitals and health systems with a suite of marketing tools that work to position and differentiate a hospital as a regional leader in gender specific cardiac care and education.
-
To provide education and tools to ensure that HeartCaring hospitals and physician practices recognize that not only are men and women different, but their heart healthcare needs can be very different as well.
- Provide gender specific information about the symptoms of heart disease in women
- Review diagnosis and treatment recommendations for heart disease
- Provide tools and an overview of information to assist women patients in making positive healthy choices to prevent heart disease
- Review current educational materials available to educate women about symptoms of heart disease
To support the implementation of regional HeartCaring certification, participating hospitals and health systems will be provided with assistance from Spirit of Women and our partner NHLBI in training, coordination and logistics. Spirit of Women will also coordinate national public relations.
